What are these items on 1uz?

I have been wondering what these two items are on my engine.

The one with the oil fittings and a solenoid looks like some adapter for oil cooler. Is this correct?

The long dowl thingee is your cam belt tensioner, when you replace the cam belt you will see how this works. The belt driven pump thingee is a hydraulic fan pump which is used as opposed to electric thermo fans, you can remove this totally and run a shorter belt or rip the guts out of the pump and retain it as an idler.

I got this idea, using this fan pump as a power steering pump. But it's probobly not strong enough or flow enough.

Before rushing off and spending your hard earned dollars or Peso check the size of belt you need by measuring the length of run.

You will me mighty miffed to spend $50.00 on a belt that doesn't fit your purpose.

Yeah true. I'm going to keep the A/C though. Hoping it will have just enough belt wrap to keep it tight. I read a post here somewhere where someone claimed it worked fine.

Because? If you mean because of the belt wrap around the crank pulley, there seems to be conflicting opinions as to whether that works....

The belt is run around the idler for three reasons.

First is to increase the wrap on the crank pulley to give it sufficient friction area to transmit the power to drive the air conditioner, power steering and alternator. The belt could be driving up to 10kw of accessories at it's peak. The small contact area you would create would increase the wear rate on the belt.

The second reason is to give sufficient wrap to run the pump. Airconditioning can take up to 7kw to drive. You will create the same problem as point 1 but from a different force.

The third was to run either the hydraulic pump or the viscous fan, depending on what version of the engine you are using.

The obvious side effect will be belt squeal when you wind on lock at parking speeds. We've all heard it and know how annoying it would be to live with.

I was running with an incorrect belt layout for about a year.
I only had about 20degrees less wrap on the crank (I went crank-alt-tens, instaed of crank-tens-alt).
As soon as the alternator got any load the belt would squeal constantly.

That idler pulley adds about 60degrees wrap on the crank (if you run the aircon)
Without it you'll have a constantly squealing belt.

Which would suck............

I know you cannot run the oil pump without oil long, I replaced it for an idle pulley of a vn Holden v6. I have had no problems with this modification at all, but I am still to get the aircon regased
