we pulled the motor out of BLK40T yesterday and are doing a freshen up, those that aren't familiar with the car, it's a 1UZ with Twin Garrett 62mm turbo's, it produces a smidge under 1200hp @ 30psi, the motor is in a Ford Capri has run as fast as 8.20@167 slicks, 3050lbs and 8.31@165mph on 275 radials and 3200lbs. its been in the car 4.5 years, 40000km street driving, 120 dyno runs and 350 1/4 mile passes, engine spins to 8000-8200rpm this is the first time the motor has been out. apart from the usual oil changes etc. the only time the valve cover has come off was about a year ago to check head studs. so far all looks good, will keep updated with more pics

the motor still uses alot of the factory bits like the belt, valves, flexplate, oil pump, balancer etc it's testament to just how well these motors hold up

Clean! Looks like it could have done another 40k ...did you do a leak down?

yeah, looks surprisingly good. nah not a proper leakdown, comp test was showing the motor was tired, track was saying im still a teenager lol.

damn thats a badass motor, where can I find a list of all the mods?

2 x Garrett GT35R's
Powerglide
mild ported factory heads
PAC valve springs
Argo Rods
8.5:1 Ross Pistons
custom cams
cometic head gaskets
10mm ARP head studs
standard size ACL bearings (wasn't factory like i thought)
ARP mains
everything else is factory

Looks good .. Yes just a tidy up .. But I guess your doing more than that ??

nah, this one is going back to standard, just replacing whatever needs to be replaced.

a bit more of the motor unfolded

you can still see the hone marks on the bores, the rings have barely worn

hard to believe piston pins this thin could withstand 1200hp and years of punishment

still only using 10mm head studs. 100's of passes @ 30psi and they have done a fantastic job. the torque was checked a year ago, they hadn't budged

cams and cam caps didn't fair too bad, that was the worst of them

only removed a few rods so far, crank looks pristine

shims look ok, not too much damage or wear

that looked to be the worst of them

bearing has seen better days, but, still not bad considering

Frigging Awesome! What are the specs on the cams?

Ryan

thanks, not much bigger than factory, that's all i can say :D

few more pics, everything is pretty much out. CC was done, the comp was actually 8:1 and not 8.5:1 as previously thought. that is very impressive 8:1 comp and the car is showing around 1200hp@30psi, baby cams, mild port job, factory lower intake manifold, alot of the 1UZ guys believe a full custom intake manifold is good for a minimum 100hp. can't wait to see what a 10.5:1 CR, race port & cams, full custom intake and Precision turbo's can do

not much meat there, has a -16cc dish. think was something like .150''-.180'' crown

super tough block, Norm was super impressed, he said my Ford modular has nothing on this, it's a much more superior and stronger block

something like this...

Hi FoPar
Ive been enjoying reading and seeing your updates and must admit to learning a lot.

Thought you might want to have a look at what
Autronic and I have been up too. I'm very interested in the comments on the intake manifold as a couple of weeks ago I machined up a pair of these.
Still have to do the horns and air box to suit but you get the idea.
Its made for a large single throttle body but have plans for a manifold for 4age throttle bodies.

Be nice if anybody else out there is interested in a set or two so I could get the most out of the complicated set up and give a sharp price to members.
Let me know what you think..

Cheers Craig Young

Check the main tunnel.....
What are you going to do with water and how you going to keep it away from compression/ combustion ?
Once you step it up.
I send you the pictures of head on our r&d stuff?

looks great Craig, very well made piece of kit so far.

ash, the whole block is being checked as we speak, the main tunnel wasn't too bad, 1 of the mains and 1 one of the big ends looked a bit worse than the others, but after 380 passes one would expect something, it was a planned freshen up and even after all this time, it was running numbers towards the end, the last meet it ran a PB on a radial, you know what they say an engine usually run's it's best before it dies, so that was a sign, pull it out before something happens :p it's done a hell of alot of work, possibly a little distortion, the engine builder measured a bit with us, it was fine but a proper full inspection will tell us more.

going to step up the head studs. the heads were lifting a little right towards the end there, the last 40 or so passes, it was only if the car was hot. if we cooled it down to 100F before we raced it would be ok. bit of pressure would build up and blow a little water out the cap. even going to step the head studs up on this one, going to a 7/16'' head stud, on the new combo it will probably be 1/2'', i don't think we will be running much more than 30-35psi in this one or the new motor anyway.

nah, you never showed me the R&D pics.

Hey Fopar,

I've been following this on a couple forums, awesome effort to you guys and your crew. Thanks for sharing so much info too, theres not too many people out there that like to divolge as much info as you, and more to the point real life info/data. Seeing a centura running a 1UZ and this car/engine combo is the reason why ive starting researching and gathering 1UZs bits and pieces for a project.

Again Well Done and thanks for sharing good relative info.

Cheers John

hey John, thanks mate, that's what it's about, sharing useful info that can help someone in the future and maybe save them a few bucks. they are a great engine and stuff all needs to be done to them for the motor's to survive. we aren't millionaires so you have to make the little budget work.

i think it has now proven that the combo works, if we can do it then anyone can. all it takes is good machining, good engine builder, good tuner all that combined allow the parts to work like they should. you don't need big $ heads with huge OS valves. the factory heads with a mild port, still using shim over bucket and the factory valves is good for 1200hp.

What's planed on other engine build above this one ?? Seems how far can you go seeing this combo worked very well !! Even though tmk your going more aggressive on other engines build . Be interesting if raising compression will limit max power output ?? I guess not with E85 ?? Will make it more throttle responsive! In one of those pics the cam isn't on bucket that well which looks like it could spit the shim out ?? BUT it's worked and the proof is right there !! Don't disregard other elements to the Capri too !! IMO nice shape for age and rear suspension set up works !! Top combination !! One of my fav cars over the years, road oriented rather than all out race !!

not much difference, more comp 10:1+, new Precision 64mm turbo's, 1mm OS valves (with 1mm OS over 330cfm has been achieved numerous times by our porter and engine builder, 330cfm is around where we want to be, it's 40cfm more than we have now), slightly bigger cams and new custom intake manifold (no more factory lower manifold) the goal is still street car first then race second, we are confident 1500hp is achieveable while still remaining streetable. we would like to see that power on around 35psi, we don't want to puch it much over that.

Aha this will be interesting !! On another engine similar to what you had in Capri I went from 9.0 comp roller making 330 rwkw then built a forged assembly around a Iron Eagle 8.2 Dart with 3.25 strocker crank, same TFS induction and maxed out turbo's on 15lb . The compression is 7.8 .. We upgraded turbo's and fuel system and made 480 rwkw on 16lb .. The higher comp motor with cam not exactly perfect for turbo engine is nicer to drive esp on street .. The new Dart engine has wide LSA 115 / 336 @50 . Seems the comparison between the two engines is higher comp the motor makes the power while lower comp the turbo's make the power ! I would requirec bigger turbo's to makemore power !! but its scarry now with 245 x 17's !! The low comp has more power but rubbish throttle response !! If it was an auto there wouldn't be such a problem !! I guess the Cometic head gaskets ( thicker) made the comp lower ?? On the Capri's engine ? E85 wasn't around then either .
