I'm in search of a solution to a slipping nut problem.

I've taken the hydraulic fan assembly off a 1UZ and am trying to take the pulley off so I can pull the guts out of the pump, but the nut that holds the pulley on appears to have stripped the thread and just rotates.

Any suggestions. If I cut it off, I'll have to re-thread the shaft, correct?

That nut has clock-wise thread to loosen it as oppose to the regular thread. I mean it's in the opposite rotation. If you can find the backward tap & die, then perhaps you can re-thread it. However, it's not easy to do because the shaft is mild steel. Currently, there're 2 nuts with backward thread. 1 is this hydraulic pump nut, and the other is the tensioner pulley nut for the drive belt.

The term 'bugger' comes to mind. Looks like I've stripped it for sure if its a reverse thread. Will have to try and get the bolt off then see what my options are.

Ok, its done. The nuts been cut off and, yes, the thread is gone. Re-threading does not look like it will be easy without further damaging the bearing in the pump.

A replacement hydraulic unit, or a fan assembly from an LS400 now appear the better options. Anyone got one they don't need?

You may just need the LS pulley bracket and its pulley, then run electric fans, then run the belt through..Sorry to hear what you're going through.
