found the piece, didn't measure it but 10 cm sounds about right
never occured to me that this should be called sump though
(had to look a bit, partly covered by the radiator and partly covered by
big steel frames on the engine that is used for bolting the engine to a gimbal)

A Lexus sump consists of 2 parts.
An alloy section that bolts to the bottom of the engine block and a tin pan (looks like chrome in your photos) that then bolts to the bottom of the alloy section.

The depth of the sump is measured from the bottom of the engine block to the bottom of the tin pan.
I've just ordered a new sump from Sudsy as I think it will improve the oil cooling on my car.
It suffers from the oil overheating on long hills because I thrash it to get up them.
An alloy section that bolts to the bottom of the engine block and a tin pan (looks like chrome in your photos) that then bolts to the bottom of the alloy section.

(yes, the bottom part is chromed)
(I also have some problems with high oil temps,
the mill is in a boat - and boats are ALWAYS driving uphill, no such a thing as a flat
road for boats, not to mention downhill)

My new sump turned up this morning from Sudsy and it is a thing of beauty.
It looks too nice to get dirty.
I'll fit it in the next few weeks and report back on how it goes.
Sudsy has machined the flange surface between the sump and block and pre-drilled and countersunk all the mounting holes so it is literally a bolt in proposition.
The only thing I need supply is new sealant.
I expect it to hold a litre or more oil than my existing pan and being alloy it should make it run cooler, which is a good thing.
It looks too nice to get dirty.
