Two Japanese automakers have announced recalls in the U.S. Toyota is concerned over rusting in a few Toyota Tacoma pickups. Honda, in the meantime, says a handful of Civics may have steering column snafus.
About the Toyota Tacoma
There are about 150,000 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks in cold weather states that are likely to be affected by the recent Toyota recall. Model years 2001 to 2004 are impacted.
The recall concerns the Tacoma pickups which were sold or are now registered in one of the 20 cold weather states, as well as the District of Columbia. The impacted automobiles were all built between August 28, 2000 and August 27, 2004.
In cold states, there is salt on the roads to keep it from being icy. This causes the spare tire carrier to rust under the automobile. The issue is that the carrier can fall off the car and hurt other automobiles. The car owner would end up without emergency stuff when needed also. There are a number of problems with it. Salt is only put on the roads in cold states though.
Toyota states the spare tire carrier assembly may not have been properly treated in a few cases.
"During manufacture, the spare tire carrier lift plate may not have been sufficiently coated with phosphate," said the automaker. "The lack of phosphate coating combined with prolonged exposure to high road salt use and other environmental factors may contribute to the development of more than normal corrosion of the lift plate on some vehicles.”
On top of Washington D.C., states consist of New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, VA, Vermont, Wisconsin, West Virginia, CT, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire and New Jersey.
There were three reports to Toyota of the tire falling off while the car was in motion as well as three reports of corrosion damage to the assembly. This informed Toyota to the issue and brought on the recall to launch.
2012 Civic busted already
Meanwhile, Honda is launching a much smaller-scale recall of its own.
The 2012 Honda Civic is getting recalled now too. Honda is launching the recall of 157 Civics from that model year.
Evidently, when the automobiles were assembled, some 2012 models mistakenly received a series of steering column tilt brackets intended for 2013 Civics. Honda said that it affects the crash performance of the automobiles.
Honda does routine quality checks on the car, and that was when the issue was noticed. No accidents or injuries have occurred due to the problem.
Letters will be sent in December to affected customers.
Honda is evidently not doing very well considering it recalled 820,000 Civics in Pilots a few months ago for headlight issues.
