I had the center CV joint in the tail shaft fail 3 weeks ago and only got it all working again a couple of days ago but have found the rear gearbox seal in the extension housing now leaks :(

Does anyone know the part number or where i can findout, i have the LS400 manuals but they have a different rear housing to the slip yoke crown box. Can the seal be replaced without removing the rear housing or is it pressed in from the inside??

Cheers.

The seal presses in from the rear.

You need a deep 32 (it may be 31)mm socket to release the drive yoke and you can slide it out. Lock it in Park to allow you to take the nut off and on. The nut has a crush section yu will need to straighten first.

Use a hooked steel puller the remove the seal and tap the new one in.

Thanx Peewee, got an MX83 one yesterday.

I pulled the tailshaft out this morning but cannot find the 31/32mm nut that Zuffen is talking about. Looking at the new seal it appears that the old one should just pull out and the new one press in - old one does not wanna move though so wanna make sure before i wreck the old one. A pic is attached...

Zuffen said press it back in using a 31-32mm socket as a guide to make sure it goes in straight.

Thats all.

I normally use the old seal

Got it out, yep total PITA! Used a 1 5/8th socket to press it back in, 31/32 mm socket is the same dia as the tail shaft yoke. Hopefully it now doesn't leak anymore.

Does anyone have the part number for the crown rear gearbox seal? I ordered 90311-42024 but its to small in diameter for the crown gearbox. thanks

how about 35108-30111 or 35108-35030 for the slip yoke seal
the part number you quoted was for transmission with three prong fitting
