theres one been offered, low millage from a 1999 ls400, i dont know if its a vvti..how do i tell??(and i dont want to give the game away to him as the price will go up, i have pic)
it does not come with the ecu...will my 1991 ecu run it??(bet it wont)
VVTi intake facing the fron and non vvti intake facing the right side. The 1991 ECU will not work on the VVTi. I have an extra VVTi ecu I purchased that I can sell
If it is truely a 1999 engine, then it is definitly a VVTi engine. Like david said, look at the intake that is a dead give-a-way.. Also, IIRC all VVTi engines had alloy timing belt covers where the none VVTi engines had black plastic belt covers...
then it is a non vvti..(black plastic cam belt covers and intake on side of engine facing to side of car).so man stating its 1999 and 40000miler is "misinformed"(shall we say)
think i will stay well away and stick with the one i have..(non vvti)
Hi guys,
May I ask a few question on this subject?
1. When was the production years of this 4.0 VVTI motor?
2. was it available in a front sump configuration?
3. HP ratings and where did it make power?
Hi guys,

*GS an LS appear identical except the GS has slightly better exhaust system which may be the only reason for power difference.
** SC has single tube exhaust manifolds and secondary exhaust similar to LS and is probably over-rated with a more accurate power of 280hp which seems to be confirmed by actual track times.
John, that you know of, has anyone actually put a VVTI engine on an engine dyno to see what the true power is?
I've seen many cars with engine dyno (not chassis dyno) proven power run consistant times that showed a different power based on track time calculations. Im not saying that they are or are not making the quoted 290 or track time calculated 280, but there are too many variables (especially for 10hp) in my oppinion like incorrect weight, bad launch, excessive wheel spin, bad shifts and so on. 1/10 on an ET is typically worth about 10hp and having a car that is not setup perfectly (i.e. suspension alone) can easily throw you off 1/10 or more. Yes, ET and MPH will get you close but unless the car is setup perfect and runs a perfect race, the calculated number are close but not dead on and 10hp could easily be in the realm of being correct, but again not dead on. Now if the qouted number was 290 and yet the car ran consistant times / MPH's that equated to say 240 then yeah I would easily agree that the quoted numbers are incorrect or there is a problem with the car as that is a substantial differance.
Ed,
I'm very keen on getting one. I just need to be very sure that I get the right engine. The guys like to bs you into buying there stuff they can't sell to anyone else.
I would rather be 110 percent sure than to make the mistake of buying the older engine.....
No, the LS and GS400 use dual tube tri-y type manifolds. Not great but better than the SC400 using the single tube log type manifold. Lexus went back to the single tube in 2001 on all apps.
