After best part of 12 months battle with running issues, trips to garages who say they know what they are doing and then don't, I have to admit that the issue will can not be resolved without knowledgeable help!

Can anyone recommend someone who knows these conversions inside out? Preferably based in the southern half of uk, but will travel further if someone reckons they can sort the issues.

Look forward to receiving any suggestions that will stop me reverting to plan B (remove everything and start again with a different engine).

Can we have a brief outline of your current troubles? Other than the engine doesn't quite work as intended?

Have you changed the capacitors in the ECU?

These fail at nearly 100% rate.

I recently had a UCF21 engine which was doing the same thing, stock ecu and in a Hilux and it has the sub O2s fitted. After going thru the process and finding nothing essentially chasing my tail and wasting time and money I opened up the ECU to find a leaking cap and damaged tracks on the PCB. One rebuilt ECU later and problem over

Car has been to a very hot and sunny Wales to visit 'Bushwacker' for the day. A few bits and pieces of wiring changed and parts swapped between cars, all in all a helpful and informative day that has moved things forward again. Many thanks again!!

Got the car back and as advised checked the timing and found that the belt had jumped a tooth. Now rectified and car running better with more power. Still running very rich and rough idle. Swapped to another ECU's to eliminate possibility of a fault...no change.

A few more evenings in the garage MIGHT finally get it sorted, will update with any findings.

EGR delete now completed. Car still running the same with either ECU, one original one rebuilt. Have visually inspected both, no sign of leaking caps.

Definitely better than it was but still massive room for improvement.

Runs with slightly erratic idle and misfire.
Stinks of fuel and gets 15mpg on a run.
Still running down on power.

Timing done
New caps and rotors
New coils packs
Swapped ignitors for good working ones off a running car.
Three different MAF sensors, no difference between them.
Ignition leads swapped from running car, no change.
Fuel pump and filter replaced (don't have a fuel pressure gauge but I am getting a litre and a half in 30 seconds from the return pipe).
O2 sensors in manifolds replaced (had fault codes after the fabrication work).

Running out of ideas.........

What are long term fuel trims @ bank1 , bank2 ? Idle and 3000rpm, P range?

Have no diagnostic plug, so not sure I can check this without one.

To read the trims, you only need VF1, VF2, TE1 @ ECU

Hi George R,

Hopefully my googling about how to do this is correct.....
- TE1/E1 connected- VF1= 0v (VF2 0v-4.7v-0v etc)
-TE1/E1 connected - VF1= 0v
-TE1/E1 NOT connected- VF1= 0.02v

Stinks of fuel and plugs soot up quickly, top of inlet manifold gets excessively hot very quickly.

te1 must be disconnected
your very first checks are at 80c coolant temp, normal idling and 3000rpm
Upon these conditions, monitor voltage at vf1 and vf2. Each pin corresponds to its bank.
0v is way too rich, 5v is way too lean, 2.5v is perfectly ok

See how the trims vary with load and rpm, and see if they are the same or not

Exhaust does not appear to get excessively hot.

VF1 Tickover 0.02v/ 3000rmp 0.02v
VF2 Tickover 3.54v/ 3000rpm 5v

Possible causes???

Hard to say right at the moment
Possible causes are primary o2 sensors, injectors, ignition system

Try swapping these items one at a time between banks and looking at the voltages, would they swap along with the system you tweaked.

For example
test 1: swap primaries
test 2: swap coils, ignitors and high tension wires
test 3: swap injectors

upon each test, reset EFI system prior to monitoring the voltages

Also make sure that VF1 pin is connected to ECU so your close to zero voltage reading isn't due to circuit break.

p/s I usually use the strategy of firstly finding out the cause of difference between the banks, that usually helps greatly to address the rest.

The workshop may have removed some inlet parts to access the column and might not have tightend / replaced a hose

Been a bit hectic so only just got back to the car.

Swapping parts side to side seems to have no effect. Readings from each bank here....

As a last resort have a complete running LS400 waiting to do a complete swap over.
