check light query

Hey guys,
A little confused here.
Putting a 1uz into a Hilux and I had set up check light W wire to a globe and the other side of the globe to 12v power. Nothing happens.
So I disconnected 12v power and earthed the wire instead and the light comes on.
Is this okay?

Did you link the TE1 and E1 terminals in the diagnostics port ?

Don't have a diagnostics port.
I will link TE1 and E1 tomorrow and see what happens.

I just went out and checked those wires. What I found was I had the E1 wire earthed to the left hand cylinder head. Corrected it an now the light works perfectly. Who knows how much pain and time you just saved me.
