Rods are the weakest link for sure. Pistons will still die real quick if they see any detonation. For reasons of bad luck mostly, my last 2 motors lost No.5 from a brief period of det.

If you're doing rods though, you may as well do pistons at the same time.
 
It's alot of work pulling an engine down just to fit pistons..
Your better to do BOTH and be done...
A broken rod is fatal a blown piston will "possibly" still get you home...
Besides many have increased the boost on these engines which have resulted in rod failure..
Possibly a result of bad tune ? But with forged rods there's no issues...
 
Oh ya don't worry im no dummy to boost a stock 2uz, thats a joke. I can't find anything on the 1uz pistons vs. the 2uz's. Any difference in strength?
 
Hey, is this landon? I know of a guy with an 03 stepside tundra who wanted to build a motor near me (pineloch is a street nearby)
