i want to fit the 1uz in to my 924s engine bay using the original gearbox and torque tube set up...the engine is tight but would fit,so it would be a question of someone being able to make a spacer/plate to bolt the torque tube and 1uz together and a flywheel/clutch set up...i am real serious about getting this done, anyone that can do this and has parts or a car to check please pm me...this would be a great swap as many people have done the rover v8/buick 215 thing and the small block chevy thing, they say 300 hp sbc in a 924s would give a 5 sec 0-60...so a 1uz should be similar...

funny you mention that..

Hi Beario
Just working last night on the spacer/adaptor plate for my own 924 4 speed transaxle to 1uzfe project. It is just a little different in that it will be a mid engined V8 in a chassis of my own design so no torque tube..

I own a CNC machining business and have had both the gearbox and motor measured on a friends CMM (co-ordinate measurement machine) to get the alignment spot on first time...

I am using a Holden/GM throw out bearing and will be making an adaptor to use the three bolts on the main inside seal to give a good solid base for the bearing to push from (after reading about some of the issues that can occur when the throw out bearing is not mounted solidly enough). The main difference here is that it changes the clutch from a pull type on the 924 into a push type clutch.

I also was looking to use a standard 924 clutch plate as it fits the 20.25mm X 24 spline but am going to get uprated fingers as a standard 924 is about 77KW compared to 160KW 1uzfe...

I am also making an aluminium flywheel with steel face inserts a bit like the Fidanza flywheel..

So I have plenty to do to make this all happen but with enough time it should be a fun toy..
I certainly am able to make an adaptor plate like the one you are after but I am not sure if the bolt holes in the transaxle are the same as the motor bell housing .. I will enclose a couple pictures of the transaxle.. (ignore the nameson the photos).. if you could check and let me know..

I will price up the spacer/adaptor material tomorrow and see what it would cost to send it to you..

Cheers Craig

hi craig i think the only way you could make me an adapter is if you picked up a complete torque tube from a wrecking yard, put it on the bench with the 1uz and measured it up etc to make sure it all fitted,i dought the torque tube would cost much like 50$...pm me your thoughts and price/time frame,cheers...

Sorry Beario

Hi Beario
Sorry for being a bit slow to get back to you..
I have been checking over the file that I have got back from my CMM guy..
The only thing that bothers me is that when I mirror the file there is a 0.3mm difference in the dowel holes..
He also did the transaxle measurements..
Maybe if i hadn't check these holes on my mill after clocking up on the main machined bell housing to gearbox hole and finding that the dowels to centre hole are exactly equal like I would expect from Mr Toyota...

It all makes me a bit wary and it is going to take a little time to check this out.

Cheers Craig:confused:

just not sure about the measurements..

Hi Beario
What it means is that until I am satisfied that the hole and dowel spacings are spot on I wont be putting an expensive chunk of aluminium in my machine..
I need to make a couple of jigs to check both the gearbox and motor as if they are off it will just eat clutches.. this will just take some time..

Cheers Craig

back from holiday...

Hi Beario
Sorry meant to reply to your e-mail..
OK so the material for the aluminium plate is $400 nzd
The cover plate you have is different from the transaxle I have..
The only one I could find is $225 nzd including shipping.(assuming correct year)
Then there will be measuring with a CMM at $75 nzd
The machining and program set up is $800 nzd
Then to ship to you in the UK is about $200 nzd
so about $1700 nzd for the adaptor plate..
If you can find 4U2QUIK's suggestion on the net it might be a better and cheaper option..
just let me know.
Cheers Craig Young

if I had the porsche bellhousing I'd cmm it for free and post the file for everyone to use.
and I'd suggest sending one to me but by the time you guys ship one over you coulda just paid the guy over there to measure it.

btw, I notice that you made a comment about the bellhousing pattern being non symmetrical, this is very very common for the patterns to be almost but not quite symmetrical.

thanks for the offer but thats to much...cheers...

Im currently in the middle of fitting A 1UZ into my 1984 Porsche 944.

I used the standard 1UZ bellhousing and shortened the torque tube housing (not the shaft itself) so it would fit with a custom adaptor which bolts between the bell housing and the torque tube.
I used a MR2 turbo flywheel which I had machined to take the 1UZ ring gear and had the holes slotted and sleeved to ensure they would be strong enough and to stop any movement.I used a stage 1 escort cosworth clutch and a ford clutch release bearing with built in slave cylinder to save having to mess about with throw out forks/arms.

I dont most of this work on my own with lots of carefull measuring and thought.

I got the engine started a few weeks ago and everything seems to be running well. Just need to fabricate a sump now so the steering rack will fit!

Daniel
