1UZFE Valve Spring Upgrade

Recent movement in the Lexus-Toyota Motor sports is to make the Lexus-Toyota V8 motor make more horse power.  The aged and exhausted 2JZGTE is slow fading and maxing out.  The next level of Lexus-Toyota performance would be the high tech, light weight 32 valves of the 4.0 to 4.7 liters.  In this article, we will be focus mostly on the 6 bolt main 1UZFE.  However, this might apply to the 2 and 3UZFE.

Officially there is no after market valve springs available for the 1,2 or the 3UZFE.  However, thanks to Spark Racing for providing a 2JZGTE valve so I can compare the two springs.  Here the specs I obtained:

Measurements 1UZFE 2JZGTE
Length 1.691" 1.655"
Outside Diameter .997" 1.028"
Inside Diameter .711" .708"
Spring Diameter (Individual - Top to bottom Diameter) .129" .130"
Spring Diameter (individual - Outside to Inside Diameter .142" .155"
Spring Load 42-46 lbs 65 lbs (*)

Below is the data specs from the Lexus 1UZFE:

From my subjective testing of the two springs, the 2JZ is much stronger.  However, I don't have the OEM specs on the spring load and tension.  Please email me if you do.  One of the reasons the 2JZ springs are stronger is because the 2JZ has larger diameter spring.  Besides being stronger, the 2JZ spring is also slightly larger in the outside diameter.  The 2JZ spring is about .293" larger than the 1UZ spring.  However, their length is essentially the same.  I strongly believe the 2JZ spring would work perfectly on the 1UZFE heads.  Here are come pictures of the two springs together.  The rusty spring is from my 1UZFE and the clean black spring is from the 2JZGTE

The picture below is the resting length of the two springs.  The 1uzfe spring is slight longer.

Here is a picture of two springs being compressed.

Here is a picture of the two springs are fully compressed.

Looks like the 1uzfe spring would bottom out first.

Even thought the valve springs are interchangeable, but the parts are still very expensive.  The average after market valve springs with retainers is about $350 to $600.  Ouch...  Even just stock replacement with 2JZ valve springs, we see some improvement already.  However, some of the after 2JZ springs are rated at 165 lbs.  Its 100 lbs more than stock Supra TT springs.  The sad thing is that you will only get 6 sets and you will need two other friends together to purchase 4 sets of 2JZ Springs for 3 sets of 1UZ. :(

Great news.  Please contact Carson Toyota (310) 522-2300) and ask for Paul in the part department.  The list price for the spring is $4.17 each and they sell them individually.  4.17 each and you need 32 of them total is $133.44 USD.  The exhaust and intake valve springs are the same.

(*): After the 2JZ valve installed into the 1uzfe head (Pre 98) the seated pressure is 80 lbs.
