tranny fluid and check engine light

Does low transmission fluid cause the check enginge light to come on? i have a 91 LS and the check engine light came on intermittently--especially cold mornings. i checked the tranny fluid (hot) and found that it was barely within range. The light is off now after adding some fluid. just wanted to know for future reference.
