Standard Gps Unit

Guys,
Whilst the standard unit in Australia or anywhere for that matter is useless, is it just the maps or the whole unit ?
So it's not feesable to make new maps, is it posible to use the unit to read something else ?
Does anyone know what file types the unit will read ?
Can we get the system read Music on data CD or can it be cheaply modified to read other files ?
There are two cd rom drives there doing nothing, surely some smart fella can make something of it ?

Any assistance or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Steve Cheetham who used to post on the ALSC looked into it years ago but the problem was the particular format the maps need to be in and licencing - it was prohibitively expensive if I recall.

Where is the CDROM for the maps anyway?
