'91 LS400 - What evil things might happen (or not happen) if I switch from Premium gas to Special grade?

Thoughts?

if by special, you mean mid grade--- nothing special..Ha!!-- sorry about that, but it was to easy..
do you know that fuel companies do not make a mid grade-per say.. they mix there hi grade with there low grade.. you could do the same by filling halfway with each.. one more -not so known fact.. there are only a few refineries--and a few pipe supply lines, etc.. so what the different fuel companies do is share..
lets say, when an amaco truck pulls into to fill up, it gets the same gas as the shell truck, or citgo, etc.. each company does have its own additives it adds in an effort to personalize the gas the consumer is buying.. but the gas you buy at one station is pretty much the same as the one down the block..
if you thought about it,, it makes alot of sense for the companies--saves them alot of money..

Yeah, but I'm wondering if continued use will, for example, clog the injectors, put carbon on the rings, I don't know... does anyone know the downside?

i doubt the injectors will clog, or youl carbon up the rings.. but what can happen is that you may lose a little performance.. if the ecu senses a low octane fuel, it may pull back some timing-- thus lessor performance..you can probably get away with using premium fuel every once in a while.... it may sound a little off topic, but what is more important in keeping your engine in tip top shape is using a synthetic oil..the synth oil will keep things clean-internally..
