Ls400 gauge cluster

Hello I'm doing a swap in my 97 ls400 and I have a question about the gauge cluster. Is the gauge cluster controlled by the ecu or does it have it's on separate control box?

It gets some signals from ecu, and other components around the car but I would consider it as a separate unit.
