iacv question

can a malfunctioning idle air control valve knock the ecu into limp mode?
i believe its malfunctioning because im getting that hunting idle between 800 and 1200 rpm

does it bring up any codes
block off idle motor hose and crack open throttle enough to idle at 1000 rpm
see if it still hunts
if it does its something else

the only codes im getting are p0100 and some trans codes(manual trans)
its also running quite rich, to the point of black smoke out the tailpipe

ok sideshow i blocked off the iacv hose and cracked open the throttle like you said and the hunting stopded and the idle was smooth and consistant, the rev limit rose to right around 4k but it started running rich again to the point of thick black smoke, any ideas?
