So my prof's tundra's starter went out. We really don't have trustworthy mechanics in the area and i am considering offering my assistance. Since it is similiar to the 1uz how long does it take you gentlemen (1st time) and what's required. He already bought a starter, i'm guessing intake gaskets, some coolant, anything else?
thanks in advance

All you need is a starter!

The intake gaskets are re-usable and you will lose very little coolant (maybe a cupfull) from the throttle body line.

You'll need to remove all the 12mm nuts holding the manifold down.

You can then try raising the opposite side to the t/b (if this works you won't have to release the t/b coolant line) and you should be able to slide the starter out/in.

There are a couple of vac lines you may need to remove. Obviously the intake intake pipe and chamber need to be removed.

Worst part is releasing/tightening the starter bolts.

Do a search as there have been some smart solutions to those two bolts.

thanks, yeah i just saw lextreme's tutorial. Someone mentioned in the suv's these two bolts are easier to get too, hope that is also true with the tundra.

My tutorial is pretty good and I am not bragging either. I have changed the starter twice now and its much easier the second time. Took me 4 hours for the second time. I talked to a Lexus tech few weeks ago they would charge 11 hours at $110 per hour of labor. I tried the slitting the bolts but it was very tough and not room for it. Turbosix did a good job on it. He used a dremel, but I can't duplicate his work. However, for my iron block project. I weld the nuts on the block and crew the two 14 mm from front to back. That way will save an hour next time.

Now you will get an A for your class since you do the work for your professor. If not, have him contact me....

Or you might remove the starter and relocate it in front of the engine. You'll save hours for next time..LOL. I hope it won't be the second time.

Steve,

This is what I am talking about.
