I am in the process of putting a 1uz into a ln106 hilux which will all sit onto of a nissan gq patrol chassis and suspension. All of the metal work and paint etc I have covered but the only auto electrics I have done before is wiring up some speakers. The engine is out of a toyota soarer with a 40-40-40 plugs and hilux was originally 2.8L diesel. I have spent plenty of time staring at the wiring diagrams and am thinking that I might buy some bits and have a go at starting the wiring but still not 100% and want to double check to make sure I am on the right track and see what I have missed.

Use the original starter relay that is already in the hilux - wire up the trigger wire coming off the starter - I think it is black with red strip

EFI relay wired up on a 4 pin relay
85 - Pin 24 (MRel)
86 - Earth
30 - +12V (Battery)
87 - Pins 31 and 32 (+B and +B1)

Relay for power to igniters
85 - ignition from key
86 - Earth
30 - +12V (Battery)
87 - BLK-ORG wire to ingniters

Fuel Pump Relay using 5 Pin
30 - Fuel pump.
86 - Oil pressure switch wire.
85 - Ignition.
87 - ignition Start wiring supplying 12volts only when the engine is being cranked.
87a - Ignition

Is that anywhere near close?

Thanks in advance

Well you'll have power to the ignitors and that's about it. MREL and FP work on earth return. What model is your UZ out of? If you're unsure get the part no from your ECU (89661-*****) and use the part no search function in Toyodiy to find out. Then can you read a wiring diagram? Quite happy to send you one if I have the right one but I will have something close. It is actually reasonably straight forward to wire a UZ into a Hilux but to do it right is does eat time and will do your head in

My ecu number is 89661-24220 and I think it is out of a 92 or 94 soarer. I searched and it looks like the ecu is from 91-94 soarers.
I have been using the 1992 Lexus sc400 diagram and most I the wire colours and locations seem to be the same. Is there a better diagram I should be using?
I can follow a wiring diagram but still trying to get me head around exactly what needs to be connected to what, and then when I think I am heading in the right direction I get told or read I'm back at square one
The 1uz is a far cry from the old diesel that only has half a dozen wires comming through the firewall.

Cheers

I just happen to have the factory wiring diagrams for that and have one of those engines and ECUs in my Surf and when I put it in had no diagrams for the Surf and used the SC400 diagrams available on this site (which are a diagram where someone has decoded everything and presented in PDF form). While as luck would have it the damn thing fired up first time (and the wife learnt not to lean over the front gaurd while this was happening when there were no exhaust manifolds on the engine while wearing a short skirt with no undies on trying to get me to come in for the night) I couldn't turn the damn thing off.... Relay around the wrong way.. The wife did recover but no more short skirts ever again....(no scars just something singed off)

I find that now the propper wiring diagrams help a lot even after doing a few

HAHA, my wife is due to drop in the next few weeks so I don't have to worry about the whole short skirts and no nickers issue if I ever get the engine going.
I was thinking of getting a Gregories/haynes manual for a soarer which should have some more info on wiring diagrams but will check them out.

When you say the fuel pump and mrel are both 'earth return' what does that mean?

what is haynes manual
me spend 3 hour last night on google
found many manuals for soarer on turkish and russian internet pages

Haynes and Gregory's are both workshop manuals and are about $50-60au. I have bought one for just about every car I have owned. Great for just knowing the order of dismantling and reassemble parts as well as torque specs etc. I am not sure how detailed the wiring diagrams are though for 1UZ's.

The aftermarket manuals aint all that good on the wiring diagrams and aftermarket decent 1UZ diagrams? Yeah good luck.. If they were that easy to find we'd all have them.

Bimbo MREL and FP trigger the earth side of the relay switching. If you want a copy of the factory diagrams send me a PM with your home e-mail addy as even zipped while in PDF form they're a huge file so things like g-mail tend to reject them. Oh bimbo I'm 4thsurf everywhere else and can be found on that facefarce site. look up Toyots Surf Specialists

Searching on here trying to find info and sort out wiring I found this comment a few times form someone who has wired up a number of cars and 1uz's

i never run injectors or ignitors of a relay

the ecu has 2 power systems
one is efi relay
other is power to inj/coils/ignitors all one wire never connect this to a relay
toyotas mostly run this power direct from the key
if u have all powers running thru a relay then if the rest fo yr wiring is not up to spec then this can happen

run the blakc/orange direct to ign 12v directly on yr key
or find the power that powered up yr orig coil and connect it to that wire

What are peoples thoughts on this method as aposed to what most people seem to do - ie run relays

Cheers

This picture I got
Mrel is 12v. Cannot see ground for mrel
Am I right
I sent him email about ignita and injecta +
So me run it to my key
I waste too much paper printing and drawing wiring

I have wired up the relays pretty much as described in my initial post, I think the only thing I changed was pins 87 and 87A on the fuel pump relay and it starts and stops all on the hilux key the way it is supposed to.

i too am wiring up a 40 40 40 ECU and using a SC400 lexus diagram, the pdf is tittled " UZZ30 "

and looking at that, MREL output is +12v, not an earth signal.....

I am not at the point where i can plug it all in to try,

can anyone confirm this as correct?

Thats the way I always wire them. I've done 10 now with no issues.

I use relays for the fuel pump, starter circuit and main power distribution.

nice one matey,

that samsdad fella had me worried, but i was certain i'd read the diagram and wired it correctly!

I am at the same point, but different ECU, 92 LS400.
The giude I have used says MREL to 12V+ but I have found other discrepancies that makes me want to confirm this.

Everyone seems to have avoided a direct answer, other than samsdad.
Not real sure about soarer ECU, but just to confirm, my LS400 ECU MREL is 12V+ to EFI relay.
Here are diagrams I used, and has all UZ variants
https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B...9uNEU/edit?docId=0B7FYCjMZX9Rtb3ZtM2ZicS03enc
And here is the write up/guide
http://oldschool.co.nz/2011/forum/index.php?showtopic=30736#p701443
In my case, I have 92 LS400 26/16/22/16 ECU plug config.
FC pin description in write up says is positive trigger 0.005 or 0.003 volts?
FC Fuel Pump controller
... (NOT A Core Wire) - FC Fuel Pump controller - you dont need this wire, this is 'half the speed wire' it sends a signal to the fuel controller ECU to half the pumps speed at idle, this does not trip a relay, the output I measured today was 0.005 or 0.003 volts not enough to trip a normal relay.
On mine it is a negative trigger and can be used to trigger COR as shown in above 92 LS400 diagrams.
Hope this helps
