Floor switch under gas pedal

Sorry for the noob question but what is the floor switch under the gas pedal on my 1992 SC400? It only activates when the pedal is floored.

It tells the transmission computer the throttle is WOT and it's time to select a lower gear.

Ok that makes sense. I guess the next question is what is the linkage going from the throttle down to the transmission for then?

A modern trans would have this done through ECU, TPS etc electronically ..
Linkage is to tell trans it can kick down manually..
