I'm a new owner of a used 1996 gs300, the same day I bought my car my transmission (A350E) started to slip until I had to pull over and had nothing after that... wonder if anyone has any ideas of what it can be? electronic or mechanical? I've searched and found one input on the internet about it can be sensors, or throttle pressure cable.. I cant get access to a repair manual or am I ready to take the car to a shop, I don't trust mechanics and I do the work myself.. so any insight would be really helpful.. oh and I'm going to get a computer tomorrow to check for codes, but if codes pop up, I'll have no reference.. closest lexus dealership is over 100 miles away.. oh, the previous owner put too much tranny fluid in tranny, I have a feeling that is a major factor, I drained it and refilled it correctly, should problems go away? I just ran it a couple days later and the gears started to grab again but then started to slip out.. do I have to drain the tranny dry and do it all over again? or are the solenoids done? A lexus dealership said the computer needs to be flashed... oh and I just got the computer on the car, and no error codes.. have the fluid drainin now, and I'm going to go get a new filter tomorrow after dropping pan.. I'm running out of ideas except to replace the tranny.. .. .. help?

thanks, Mike

oops

sorry, I just cant seem to have anyone reply any info on my problem. I cant find anyone to help me out..

basically if u had no drive with the shifter in any gear then yr box is prob cactus

see if u remove all the elctrics from the auto u should still get some drive
wont be 1st gear but u should atleast take of in 3rd

i guess u have a mechanical problem
ill never touch an auto
ill rebiuld and engine and reiwre a car but never touch and auto
too many small valves and shittt
y dont u trust mechanics
people try to fix things on the cheap so they goto the cheap mechanics
thats y good mechanics get a bad name heheheeh

find someone who knows what they doing and ask them heaps of questions to see how good they are

okay, called up toyota

sideshow,
i just called up toyota, they said the tranny holds a ton of fluid.. they said that i can drop the pan and there should be a metal filter that can be cleaned with brake parts cleaner and to purchase 4 bottles of their type IV fluid.. he said that I should try to get the transmission flushed to get all old fluid out.. the car has 156,000 miles on it and i'm not sure when it was last serviced, I just know that the fluid was dark and it was overfilled.. and the car drove for the guy everyday without problems until I got the car and had the problems, the tranny dipstick had over an inch above the hot fill line...so... I'm going to go to toyota and buy 4 quarts at $8 a piece and hope that also dropping pan and cleaning filter if not replacing it can give a fix... if not, I guess I'll try unplugging the sensors.. trying to avoid a tranny swap..
I don't trust mechanics because last time i brought my 6 speed celica gts tranny to a shop, I got charged $900 for the work, I did the removal and replacement of tranny, after I put it back in it took a dump after two days and I tried to get it back to the shop and they went out of business that following weekend.. I had to buy another tranny for 1200 and paid 300 for labor because i didn't have access to a garage and tools again.. that tranny took a dump, they didn't put in the drain plug tight and it fell out after a week and I just gave up.. got another celica gts and never take my vehicles to mechanics again when I can do work myself...

i just cleaned the filter and cleaned the pan, the filter was clogged and it retained fluid on topside of filter when I removed it.. I put toyota atf type T IV in there and ran the car for a little bit, there used to be a loud squealing when I started the car but was gone, I assumed it was associated with the tranny problem... so.... I put it in reverse and it got into gear like it was nothing and felt strong, I popped it into drive and same thing, felt like brand new, I was feeling pretty proud, it shifted into second and I couldn't be happier, until... I parked the car and kept it running and ran inside really quick and jumped back in and put into drive and nothing again.... what the FOCK! so I pushed it into a suitable parking spot (i live in an apartment) and made sure fluid was okay and everything.. wondering if the filter got clogged again because who knows what residual filth is left in the interior of the tranny... I'm about to drop the pan again and focus on the filter, I'm sure I didn't clean it as good as I could... hmmmm.. I just don't want to have a rebuild on it yet or replace it, but it will be my last resort... I'm keeping this car

okay, wow.. i just tried this, I disconnected the battery to reset the computer and the tranny was able to engage and shift gears strongly.. didn't feel slip or anything until about 30 seconds into it.. can it be a solenoid that is getting jammed or stuck? I did it another time after that, I was able to drive it around the parking lot and floored it into second gear and it shifted strong and then it slipped out, not like mechanically, like it smoothly fell out of gear... hmm.. just everytime i reset the battery I get a nice pull for a bit..

try unplugging the solenoid wiring to the auto
will be an 8 or a 3 pin plug on left hand side 2/3s way down the auto
this will remove the electrical side of things
then u should be able to manually change gears sort off
if thhis doesnt work then yr auto i would say needs fixing
im not an auto person but with the older 1uz autos u still get somes gears
if no electrics are connected
especially reverse
as reverse is done hydraulically

anyway at end of day forums can only help so much
take it to a specialist
cars are a waste of money so go waste some
hehehehehe

cool, I'll do that in the morning.. right now i have the battery unplugged for overnight and will reconnect it in morning and I'll do the solenoid wiring to see before my last resort of replacing tranny... thanks sideshow, you are the only help i've had so far on this issue... I'll let you know what happens tomorrow..

its the transmission pump.. from a clogged filter and old fluid..
need a new one or a new tranny.. which ever is cheaper.. had a lexus mechanic diagnose me over the phone.. I hope he's right.. that would have explained the squealing noise coming from the tranny before.. over-worked clogged pump..

i have to get another tranny bottom line..... took pan off and other component below the gearing such as the solenoids and found small chunks of metal.. assuming it is the transmission pump... found a tranny for a 1000 bucks shipped... cant wait...
