This is a picture of the Mercedes Benz AMG 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8 that makes 510hp at 6800rpm during endurance testing on the dyno.
Just look at the ENTIRE exhaust system glowing red HOT!!!
Notice the manifolds are less hot than after the catalysts. The catalysts create heat as they catalize the various hydrocarbons. Notice the pipes are less hot before each primary cat on either side of the engine (cannot see drivers side) and much hotter after each pre-cat. This is again the case in the secondary cats as the pipes start to cool going into the cats and then hot again after. The Y pipe is plenty hot as is the rest of the system. Obviously it would take a LONG time running HIGH rpm before the system could get this hot so this would NOT happen to most.
