Currently I have a 2uzfe non vvti that needs new head gaskets. I did a timing belt job and left a blue paper towel in the cooling system. The car is a 2003 4runner with 297000 miles and stock ecu. Would larger valves and stiffer springs net any gains on stock ecu? Would there be any reason to use 1uzfe heads compared to the 2uz? How thick of head gaskets do I need?

You don’t need bigger valves or stiffer springs on a stocky.

If you want simple mods (bang for buck) and have the heads off; these are some simple cost-effective options you could consider: -

Purchase and fit new valve stem seals, stock head gaskets, intake gaskets.

Port the heads. You only need to radius the ports and remove any bumps and lumps and do a general smooth out but what you do to one you do to all, as the ports should be uniform.

Valve job. Dismantle the heads and clean the carbon build up from all the valves.

Cut the valve seats, face valves and lap them in. Don’t forget to remove all cutting compound.

Fit a high flow air filter, this will improve mid-range and top end.

Improve the exhaust system by fitting high flow headers, larger pipes and flow through mufflers.

Fit New stem seals and std head gaskets, copper coat the head gaskets.

Fit New intake and tb gaskets.

New coolant with 76-degree thermostat.

New plugs and gap.

Fresh oil and oil filter

Check, double check cam timing, do a comp test to ensure both banks are the same.

Check over the ignition & electricals.

Check and or clean injectors and fuel system, fuel pressure etc.

Run always on higher RON fuel. This is a must if you want some extra ponies.

Do NOT use Blue paper towels or for that matter leave any foreign matter or items in the engine.

Good luck
