I have a 1993 LS400 and am changing out the timing belt. While I'm in there it seemed like a good time to go after the valve adjustment since the left side had a nasty tick coming from the back. So after measuring all of the lashes, there is only one intake valve out of spec (.017" measured clearance) and it is on the LH bank the very end of the cam next to the firewall.

I don't own the valve adjustment tools and was wondering if anyone else has had luck with taking loose the intake camshaft, not removing but just backing out the bolts on all of the caps enough to gain the clearance needed to remove the shim. I have tried taped up screwdrivers/butter knives but that position is just super hard to get at or see.

I have a service manual and have briefly read about thrust settings and the exhaust cam needs to come out first but is this really the case?
