    The one from the vehicle is indeed later than the replacement. The extra bit may be a temperature sensor bit hard to tell from the picture. Should be ok to swap the wires and plug.

    You should be able to swap the switches on the shifter. As for the solenoid plug take the pans off and have a look where the wires go and swap them as well. What are the part numbers on the plates?

    I had a auto once where the band had welded itself onto the drum. Would go forwards but you could not even push it backwards.

    89642-20030 is the part number for the start injector timer switch. Water temp sender is part number 89422-20010 not 89442-20010

    You must still have a difference in voltage there which is just enough to light the led which does not need much current. Possibly a resistor across the terminals of the led to eliminate that voltage when running but not when not running

    It should have a filament bulb. It is only a warning light and the alternator will work without it. If you use the filament light and find that the motor still runs when you turn off the ignition (the light will illuminate) put a diode in the circuit as the 12v from the regulator feeds back...

    When an alternator dies what actually has failed ?

    Mine is worn like that but not so bad. I recently replaced the regulator which was not working properly. They are as muzza said a ND part and fitted to other alternators as well.
